Diabetic Foot Care

Image
Diabetes Management Podiatry has an important role to play in the management of diabetes. With a professional foot care regime in place, complications such as ulcers and infections can be identified and treated at the earliest stage to prevent and treat issues. Diabetic Assessments Regular assessment is also advocated by the Royal College of Podiatry which recommends that everyone who has diabetes should have their feet checked regularly with a healthcare professional. We are experts in diabetic foot assessment and provide advice, therapy and treatments. We focus on three important areas: Neurological assessment Vascular assessment Skin assessment Ongoing Diabetic Foot Care As part of every assessment, we test the level of sensation in your feet as well as the quality of blood flow and we will inform your GP about the findings as appropriate.  We also provide self-care tips so that you can perform checks in between assessments with confidence, and care for your feet correctly. How to Deal with Chilblains in Winter

Chilblains, also known as Perino, are small, itchy, red swellings on the skin. They typically occur on fingers and toes but can also develop on the face and legs. No one knows exactly what causes this painful condition, but they are an abnormal reaction to exposure to cold weather followed by rewarming. They develop in cold temperatures as the tiny blood vessels under your skin get smaller and restrict blood flow. If your skin warms up too quickly, the blood vessels then expand causing blood to rush to your extremities resulting in redness and swelling. Risk factors of chilblains People with poor circulation tend to be more susceptible to chilblains. Health conditions such as Raynaud’s disease and Lupus, an autoimmune connective tissue disease may make your more likely to suffer from chilblains. Women are more likely to get chilblains than men. Being underweight increases your risk of getting chilblains. Wearing clothing that is tight or exposes your skin to cold, damp conditions will ...

The Differences Between A Podiatrist And A Chiropodist?

A podiatrist is generally your first port of call when you have a foot-related problem. They specialise in treating foot and lower limb problems. They can treat anything from  fungal toenail infections  to more complex problems, like Plantar Fasciitis. However, you might also have heard of the term ‘chiropodist’ or ‘chiropody’. Today we will discuss the differences between a chiropodist and a podiatrist. In short, there is no difference. Some countries still use the term chiropody to describe foot and ankle medical care –countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States led the way in the 1960s in changing the name, for two main reasons: Confusion with  chiropractors  – Chiropractic is a more complementary treatment; chiropractors use their hands to relieve problems with bones, muscle...

What Is Swift Microwave Therapy?

Swift Microwave Therapy is a new therapy developed in Scotland, used for the general treatment of skin lesions in Podiatry and Dermatology.  Swift verruca treatment  uses microwave energy which is administered through a special probe applied to the skin to treat the affected tissue.  Swift Microwave Therapy to treat Verrucae Verrucae are warts which only appear on the feet. They are the result of a viral infection, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and can be not only contagious but very difficult to treat. People who have experienced verrucae will know they can be painful and a source of embarrassment and can prevent you from partaking in activities you usually enjoy. Until now, the most prevalent treatment methods have been cryotherapy or acid therapy. However, these can be quite painful and inconvenient, with the aftercare dressings affecting everyday life. What will happen at my appointment? An applicator tip will be used to deliver the microwave energy into the ski...
